Reducing Foam in A Specific Emulsification Package

I have an emulsification package that has an HLB of 10. It give me a very good concentrate and crystal clear dilution in water at 5% ... but it foams. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do without using antifoam agents?

Dear Reader,

An emulsification package with an HLB of 10 will foam but there are many factors contributing to the foaming issue such as:

1. What type of water are you testing the emulsion in? For example distilled, RO, and DI water will foam like crazy which is why for testing defoamer performance I always use distilled water first. City water will give different foam properties depending on the hardness  .

So are you testing it in the customer's water?  If not, vary the water hardness and check the foam properties and you may be pleasantly surprised.

2. Check the amount of the emulsifier package and alter it accordingly.

Many surfactants and emulsifiers will foam depending on their concentration in your neat fluid. Do you need that much emulsifier to get the properties you desire?  If not, cut the emulsifiers back.  If so, look at surfactants that have similar HLB values to those you are using and try them.

If all else fails use a defoamer.  There are quite a few out there that will work just fine and solve your problem. Thanks for reading

All Best
