Metalworking Fluid Discovery of the Century?

(IPA Wire - April 1) Privately held Ice Nine Corporation of Colorado announced the simultaneous filing of 11 U.S. Patent applications directed to a new family of metalworking fluids and equipment for its manufacture and maintenance. It is the largest single day filing of patent applications by one company in lubricant industry history. Representatives have stated that PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) applications will be filed internationally, and that there has been no public disclosures before the filings.

The products are being hailed as outside and beyond conventional synthetic, semi-synthetic, or soluble oil categories. They are referred to as NSE's for "nano-solid emulsions." They comprise a formulation of chemically coated nano-particles whose electrical charges cause them to maintain a uniform dispersement in the base fluid, forming a semi-solid lubricant in suspension. The product is coated with a complex lanthanide compound that removes phosphates from water systems and deprives potential biologicals of any food source. Eventually, microbes will enter the system though make-up water, air, and other means of contamination. When they do, they encounter natural organic additives including tetrahydrocannabinol, which is subject of the first patent application for an organic biofilm preventative that doesn't kill the microbes directly. Contact with the compound causes bacteria to lose its natural drive and ability to form the tough biofilms that are the real problems in a system. They remain disorganized, and simply float along in the system at low energy levels until they are filtered out. The unique anti-biofilm formula requires make-up fluid from a potable water source. The NSE particles themselves can be removed and "regenerated" nearly indefinitely in a machine developed by Ice Nine Corporation, that also replaces particles that are lost in drag out on parts and cuttings. Misting is reported to the lowest measurable by today's standards.

At UC Berkeley, where confidential testing of the products was performed, Dr. William Pearsley stated only: "There is no machining fluid chemistry on earth that is anywhere near this technology. The metalworking fluid industry as you know it, and the issues discussed in that industry today, will no longer exist in three years. Biologicals can't grow in a sterile environment, and nothing performs anywhere near these fluids." Dr. Taten Ricks of Stanford echoed the sentiment - "We tested everything under strict confidentiality agreements. All I can tell you is that I've never seen anything that measured as such a departure from knowledge base of commercial chemical solutions. For heat transfer, lubricity and stability, it's a milestone that everyone will continue to recognize fifty years from now.

Acceptance of the product will depend on the cost of the final delivered product, which Dr. Hayden Siddhartha (Sidd) Finch, inventor and CEO of Ice Nine Corporation, has promised will be very competitive to existing products. Dr. Finch was a highly regarded research scientist in his field, leading government research teams on hypersonic drive cooling system technology at Lawrence Livermore Labs. He is a named inventor on over 100 patents, but it is widely understood that most of his best work remains a government secret to this day.

In February of 2012, Dr. Finch left his position to form Ice Nine Corporation. He has previously declined offers from the largest chemical companies in the world who sought his services. Despite being recognized for his brilliance, he is often dismissed by his peers as an eccentric, for his long hair, casual dress, habit of working bare foot, and his passion for baseball and the French horn. Shortly after forming Ice Nine Corporation, he was joined by four of the top researchers that had worked under his direction at Lawrence Livermore Labs. One of those researchers, Dr. Ethan Sheldon remarked: "I'd follow Dr. Finch anywhere. He's living, breathing science fiction in a real world."

Not everyone is so enamored with Dr. Finch. The government has already heard complaints of foul play from the CEO's of Castrol, ExxonMobil, and FUCHS Lubricants among others faced with the prospect of having worldwide inventories of obsolete chemicals. One source stated "There is no way even Dr. Finch could have developed a product family of this magnitude in just two years. That work must have been going on under government payroll and it's not fair to expect US manufacturers who funded the work with tax dollars to have to compete with it now." Another CEO was less flattering. "Sidd Finch is genius nut-job, and he didn't move his company to Colorado for the clean water." In response to these comments, an unnamed government source remarked: "The U.S. owes Dr. Finch more than we want anyone to know. Those guys would be better off looking for a license."
