Imagine, you want to make an emulsion of 5% to fill your machine tools, you go to the grocery shop buy 5 big fat coconuts, crush it in the mixy to get the white coconut milk and mix it in water instead of expensive metalworking fluids. This may be among the many possibilites of our future. The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka is working on this ambitious project of testing the use of white coconut oil as metalworking fluid. Initial investigation results revealed that white coconut oil is a better metalworking fluid for mild steel, while soluble oil favors AISI 304 steel. MWFmag.com has been in touch with the University of Ruhunas, and will keep you updated once we have more details. Originally reported in Science Index.
