Metalworking Fluid Selection: Fuchs

FUCHS  claims to be the world's largest independent lubricants manufacturer.  We need to define "independent" I think.  They are big and need no introduction to End Users.  And...that doesn't mean squat to us when we begin our review of their website.  Fortunately, the homepage has a request for comments.  We always have a few of those.
When I was a kid, I got sick a lot.  I spent a lot of time in the doctors' offices reading those magazines with the objects hidden in the pictures.  I got pretty good at it.  That may have finally paid off today.

PAGE TEST: (1 (out of 3)) Super cool Homepage.  Next year we should give points for coolness.  Not this year.  I watch the changing sliders until I feel sleepy, but see nothing about metalworking fluids.  Metalworking fluids is apparently not their bread winning business.  So I click of the PRODUCTS tab and start looking for them.  Row 1, column 7, there it is...another link.  Click #3 and you are closing in.  Here we see our favorite statement: "Choosing the best coolant for the application is not always straight forward."  No shit.  Especially when the suppliers won't supply a decent selector chart.  Click #4 on Water Soluble and we are finally looking at all of the products on a single page, but with so little detail, it's not worth reading.  If we gave half points, that's what this would get.  They keep it simple, only five products, 4 semi-synthetic and 1 full synthetic.  From here you will need to move back and forth to compare products, but keep reading...

CLICK TEST: (-5 ) As detailed above - it's a journey to get to the detailed information.  Metalworking fluids are not easy to locate and the detail is buried deep.  You can reach there in 5 clicks if you are not ADD.  Once you get there, it is nicely organized with comprehensive Operation and Material details.  The 5th click is the Ecocool Ultralife Brochure.  It is available from click 3, but nobody downloads brochures before flipping through all the webpages.

CHART TEST: (2 (out of 3)) No chart, No points, no matter how big you think you are.  We had almost finished our review thinking there was no chart, and then during the LINKS test, we found it!  Hidden in the bottom corner of page 4 of a Product PDF.  Why hide it?  We win the Where's Waldo Award for this one.  A nice chart indeed, we just hate you for making it so hard to find and that cost you a point.  Do you really think we wanted to read all that other crap first?

LINK TEST: (1 (out of 2)) The PDS links are all there

 CLASSIFICATION TEST:

Organization-  (1/3) Points lost for putting the important stuff at the end, behind all the fluff and puff.  Saved by the Chart and links.

Detail-  (3/3) Good detail is provided, again, (did we say this yet?) once you find it.

Uniformity-  (3/3) Uniformity is excellent at the detailed level.

Overall grade- (+6) To summarize, they have just about everything you need if you have the time to find it.

Comments

So after reading your review on the Fuchs website I went looking as I've always had a hell of a time getting information about their products.  I could not make heads or tails of your review until I went to the North American website - www.fuchs.com .  The international website MWFmag reviewed is light years ahead of their North American one.  I'm pretty most of your readers are in N. America but I could be wrong.  Anyways I thought you might want to know that Fuchs has several websites...your readers might want to know as well.  Cheers to beers.

Thank you Tony!  You are absolutely right.  You would think there might be a little top down management that looked at the websites and compared them now and then, and maybe looking for a little commonality.  Google has no borders.  (Well, not counting Iran, China, etc.)
