The August edition of TLT has arrived with the cover story: The Growth of Biobased MWF's.  If you are considering switching to a biobased MWF, this article is a nice introduction to your basic concerns.  As everyone, knows, these products have come a long way over the last 10 years.  According to the article, new formulations, genetically modified crops and additives are resulting in biobased products that can compete with, and in some cases outperform, conventional MWFs.  The basestock of biobased MWFs are vegetable, and most likely soybean.  The benefits include viscosity stability, lubricity, and higher flashpoints.  Disadvantages include poor oxidative and hydrolytic stabilities, and increased microbial growth.  Ultimately, the decision will be application and supply source specific.
