Managing Sumps and Bacterial Contamination

COSHH provides the essentials for maintaning your tanks (sumps) and controlling bacteria.  And I mean the essentials - like 'no pissing in the tank.'  That's a Bozo No-No.  It just goes to show that boys will be boys and that time-honored tradition is alive and well in many places.  Pay them by the hour and you'll have to kick in the latrine door and take away their newspaper.  Pay them by the part and they're pissing in the sump.  This is why we love robots.

Their are a couple of other practical tips that are often overlooked by new MWF Managers, such as, "If you need to add biocide, choose a point of high turbulence - ensure complete mixing."  Not so high that it splashes in your face, but enough to mix it well.

The brochure may help end users comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) to control exposure and protect workers’ health.  The article talks a lot about measunring the bacteria in the system, which is a great idea, but it's all about using dip slides.  You'll probably smell the fluid before those results are ready.  In the modern world of instant gratification, it's time to look seriously at the other methods for getting that done.
