The use of chlorinated paraffin as extreme pressure additives in metalworking fluids is a long debated topic in the metalworking fluid industry. Chlorinated paraffins have shown usefulness in applications involving the most difficult materials such as Inconel and various grades of Stainless Steel, however they are never accepted by many state and federal agencies like The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the State of California EPA.

Due to the swelling registration list, the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers has added a fourth hotel for its 2014 Annual Meeting & Exhibition. STLE's conference is May 18-22 at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, about 19 miles from Orlando.

We continue looking at mist collection systems this month at METALWORKING FLUID MAGAZINE.  Almost all machining operations create oil mist to some extent. Oil mist is the aerosol that is formed when oil is used either as Soluble Metalworking Fluid or Neat cutting oil during machining.

Many oil mist producing applications result in operators being exposed to wide range of hazardous substances in the workplace. These contaminants include fumes, vapors, mists of numerous chemical compounds and micro-organisms. Depending upon the substance and the extent of exposure, employees can experience a wide range of adverse health effects potentially leading to variety of diseases.

Obtaining and maintaining the proper concentration at separate machines is a lot of work. Mueller Geraetebau of Germany manufactures a pair of quality digital metalworking fluid mixing units. The mixers are specifically designed to take advantage of the common set-up where the same emulsion is required on different machines. The emulsion is pumped without spillage to the individual machines over distances of up to 400 meters. Delivery heads of 30 meters are possible.

(IPA Wire - April 1) Privately held Ice Nine Corporation of Colorado announced the simultaneous filing of 11 U.S. Patent applications directed to a new family of metalworking fluids and equipment for its manufacture and maintenance. It is the largest single day filing of patent applications by one company in lubricant industry history.
